What Is a Flax Egg? Q & A:

Have you ever heard of a flax egg? In this post, I will discuss some of the most frequent questions I get asked when I tell someone I used a flax egg for this recipe. Remember, these are some of the most frequent questions I get asked. If you have more questions after reading this post, please feel free to comment below. I will be happy to answer more questions!

Question: What is a flax egg?

what is a flax egg whisked

Answer: It is the easiest, most cost effective, healthiest substitute for an egg from a chicken.
  • A flax egg is made by whisking ground flaxseed with water and allowing it to settle for a few minutes, until it forms an egg-like consistency.
  • You can replace one chicken’s egg with one flax egg in any baking recipe.
  • Flaxseed is an inexpensive alternative to buying real eggs.
  • Flaxseed has a lot of health benefits. Check out this article to find out more about these potential benefits.

Question: Does it have the same consistency of a chicken’s egg?

what is a flax egg whisk
Answer: Yes, it does!

The flax egg does take on the consistency of a real egg! Most of the flaxseed settles in the middle, creating a yolk like texture, while some bits of flaxseed and water create the egg-white texture. The trick is to allow the mixture to sit for about five minutes after whisking it. Then, the yolk and egg-white texture will form, creating the perfect substitute for an egg in ANY baking recipe.

Question: Can I substitute a flax egg for a breakfast egg?

tofu scrambled eggs
Answer: Sorry, but the answer is no for this question.

Unfortunately, a flax egg will not create a breakfast egg. A flax egg can only be used as a substitution for an egg in a baking recipe. But I have some good news for you…

If you are looking for a substitute for scrambled eggs, I have the perfect vegan scrambled eggs recipe for that! It’s flavor is eggy and it’s texture is fluffy, just like scrambled eggs! Check out the recipe, here!

Question: Should I buy whole flaxseed or flaxseed meal?

what is a flax egg flaxseed
Answer: You can buy either one!

Yes, either one is fine, BUT…

Keep in mind that the flaxseed has to be ground in order to create a flax egg!

If you don’t own a food processor or a high speed blender, buy the ground flaxseed (the flaxseed meal). If you do own a food processor or a high speed blender you can ground the whole flaxseed yourself at home..

Question: What is the best way to store flaxseed?

what is a flax egg freezer
Answer: Store it in the freezer!

While you can store your opened bag of ground flaxseed in the fridge as directed on the package, it will stay fresh even longer if you store it in the freezer AND it will keep the same consistency as when you store it in the fridge, meaning it won’t actually freeze!

So YES, store your ground flaxseed in the freezer. Just place it into a tightly sealed freezer safe bag, like this reusable one from rezip that I purchased on Amazon!

Question: Is all flax vegan?

what is a flax egg in water
Answer: Yes, ALL flaxseed is vegan.

You can purchase flaxseed at almost any store and it is ALL vegan. I find the best price point at Trader Joe’s, but flaxseed is sold pretty much everywhere. Check the baking aisle of your preferred market and I bet you find it.
